We set up Vicolo (which is Italian for "alley") behind the Hayes Street Grill to serve the pre-performance crowd, as well as people who want a fresh, inexpensive lunch or dinner in the Civic Center neighborhood. To that end, Vicolo has expanded its menu to include house-made lasagnes, warm sandwiches on focaccia buns, and baked pasta bolognese. See our menu. Vicolo does not take reservations.
The recently remodeled space is a comfortable hideaway. People order at the counter, find their own tables, and eat Italian vegetable salads or house-made soups while they wait for their pizza. The pizzas come by the slice or whole in black cast-iron pans. The crisp cornmeal crust is sturdy enough to act as a shell for substantial fillings made with high-quality ingredients: whole-milk mozzarella, imported Italian cheeses, fresh and dried wild mushrooms, or house-made sausage.
